ROY KILLAM DIES IN CAR COLLISION

Seven Others Injured Sunday, Some Critically, Near Stanzel

A former resident of the St. Charles community was killed Sunday evening in a head-on crash between two automobiles on a secondary road, about five miles north of Stanzel, in Adair county.

The fatality was Charles Leroy Killam, aged 75, of Des Moines. He spent much of his life near St. Charles, where he was known as Roy Killam. He was reported as the driver of one of the cars.

Four other persons riding with Killam received injuries ranging from serious to critical. All four were brought to the Memorial hospital in Winterset for emergency treatment. They were: J. W. Killam, 79, of Greenfield, a cousin of Roy Killam, Gladys Killam, 41, of Greenfield, a daughter of J. W. Killam; and Gary Handley, 10 and Larry Handley, 9, both of Orient. The Handley boys are grandsons of J. W. Killam.

J. W. Killam and his daughter were reported to have serious, possibly critical injuries. They and Larry Handley, who received two broken legs, were given emergency treatment here and transferred that same night to Des Moines hospitals. Gary Handley was released from the Memorial hospital Tuesday.

One passenger in the other car was brought to the Memorial hospital also. He was Jerry Lee Merical of Adel. He was in serious condition, and was transferred to Des Moines Monday.

There were two other passengers in the car in which Merical was riding. Both were taken to the Dexter hospital. They were: Lewis Williams, 23 of Earlham, reported in critical condition, and Wesley Merical, 75, of Redfield, said to be in serious condition.

(Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery)
