HAROLD DUNMIRE TOSSED 300 FEET

Was Standing on Main Line Tracks When Hit by Passenger Train

Harold Dunmire, 46, of Earlham, was killed there about 1 p.m. Tuesday when hit by a speeding east-bound passenger train, as he stood on the mainline tracks.

The accident occurred near where the Earlham main street crosses the Rock Island tracks.

Dunmire's body was thrown nearly 100 yards through the air by the train, which normally passes through Earlham at full speed.

Frank Wengert of Earlham, member of a railroad section crew, witnessed the death. He told investigating officers that Dunmire was walking down the tracks, as the train came up behind him from the west. As the train approached, Wengert said Dunmire glanced over his shoulder several times. He then stopped, turned and faced the approaching train, and threw up both arms just before the impact.

The body was taken to the Earlham Funeral home.

Coroner Paul Eggleston of Winterset was called to the scene. After an investigation, he officially reported the death as a suicide.

Dunmire leaves a wife and five children all living in Montana. He had spent his early life in the Earlham community, later lived in Montana for some time, but had been back at Earlham for the last several years. He was employed there as a farm laborer.
