OBITUARY

John Newton Conrad, eldest son of Lloyd and Rachel Conrad was born in Earlham, Madison County, Iowa, November 25, 1892. After a severe illness of a few days he passed away at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines May 30, 1960 at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 5 days.

He spent most of his life in Earlham with the exception of a few years in Stuart, Iowa when a young child. He joined the Army in 1918 and served one year and five months in World War I, a year of which was served in France.

He was graduated from the Earlham Academy in the class of 1912. He was married to Mabel Alice Gordon Brown on November 5, 1924. To this union three children were born: Lloyd, Mary Alice and Margaret.

John worked on farms in the Earlham vicinity and in the Earlham Echo newspaper office at which he was a linotype operator for over 40 years, up to the time of his failing health.

He joined the Earlham Methodist Church when a young man, and was a faithful member of the men's Sunday School class up to the time of his death. He was a charter member of the American Legion and a member of the Earlham Odd Fellow lodge.

He leaves to mourn his passing besides his wife, Mabel, one step-daughter, Lora Ann Brown Whitecotton of Dallas Center, one son, Lloyd E. Conrad of New York City, and two daughters, Mary Alice Conrad and Mrs. Ronald H. Gass, both of Des Moines; one brother, Earl Conrad of Port Huron, Michigan, one grandson and four step grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his father, mother and one brother, Alva Conrad.

Last Rites For John N. Conrad

Funeral services will be held for John N. Conrad at the Earlham Methodist church Thursday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m.

Rev. Paul Fotsch, pastor of the church, Rev. Willard Reynolds and American Legion Post No. 158 will have charge of the services.

Mervyn McLennan, accompanied by Mrs. McLennan, will be the soloist. Mrs. Marlin Brittain will play the organ.

Casket bearers are Gordon Standing, Merlyn Frey, Fred Gonseth, Vern Wilkie, Lloyd Smith and Orville Henry. Burial will be in the Earlham cemetery.

Mr. Conrad, who was a native of Earlham, has been in failing health for the past year. He suffered a light stroke a year ago and another December 31. Last Thursday he suffered another stroke and was taken to the Veterans hospital in Des Moines. Another stroke Saturday and pneumonia caused his death about six o’clock Monday evening.

He spent a few years farming but most of his active life he has been employed by the Earlham Echo. As a boy he worked for Mr. Rowan when he was publisher. After his return from the service in World War I he worked for Paul Stilman and Maurice Nelson, and for the past 25 years he has worked for L. R. Goeldner, present publisher of the Echo.

John was linotype operator and printer, with more than forty years of service to the Earlham Echo. He was a dependable employee and was devoted to his trade. The Echo has lost a trusted and loyal employee.

He is survived by his wife Mabel, a son Lloyd of New York City, two daughters, Mary Alice and Mrs. Ronald Gass of Des Moines, a step-daughter Mrs. Russell Whitecotton of Dallas Center, five grandchildren and a brother Earl, who lives in Michigan.
