HILDA NICHOLSON, WASHINGTON, IA

Hilda J. Nicholson, 94, of Washington, Iowa, died March 22, 2007, at the Halcyon House following a short illness.

Memorial services were held Saturday, March 24, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with the Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Burial will be at Hartman Cemetery, Truro, at a later date.

Hilda Nicholson was born April 13, 1912, in Corydon to John D. and Nellie J. (Conwell) Gerdes and was a graduate of Allerton High School. She continued her education at Simpson College in Indianola for two years where she received her teaching degree. Hilda later was awarded her Master of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Drake University in Des Moines. Her marriage to Charles Benjamin Denly took place May 26, 1939, in Corydon. He preceded her in death in 1955. She later married the Rev. James B. Nicholson on Jan. 25, 1980, in Truro. Hilda taught school for 29 years in rural Wayne County, Truro, and Macksburg and retired after teaching 17 years at Clive Elementary in West Des Moines. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association and the Madison County and Wayne County historical societies.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben; two brothers, Edward and Richard Gerdes; and two sisters, Emma Miller and Ruth Wells.

She is survived by her husband, James, of Washington, Iowa; two sons, Karl Denly of Audubon, Minn., and John Denly of Ollie; three stepchildren, Jim Nicholson of Slidell, La., Howard Nicholson of Iowa City and Teresa Fleming of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Ihno Gerdes of Corydon; two sisters, Esther Smith of Akron, Ohio, and Helen Walters of Manson; and 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund, United Methodist Church or Hospice of Washington County.

Mrs. Nicholson was born April 13, 1912, in Corydon, the daughter of John D. and Nellie J. Conwell Gerdes. She married Charles Benjamin Denly on March 26, 1939, in Corydon. He preceded her in death in 1955. She was later married to the Rev. James B. Nicholson on January 25, 1980, in Truro.

She is survived by her husband the Rev. James Nicholson of Washington; two sons, Karl Denly of Audobon, Minn., and John Denly of Ollie; three stepchildren, Jim Nicholson of Slidell, La., Howard Nicholson of Iowa City and Teresa Fleming of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Ihno Gerdes of Corydon; two sisters, Esther Smith of Akron, Ohio, and Helen Walters of Manson.
