Local Livestock Dealer Died July 30th at Age 57
Funeral services for Raymond Charles Wharff, well-known Madison county livestock auction operator, were held Sunday afternoon Aug. 2, from the Winterset Methodist church.
Mr. Wharff died of cancer on Thursday, July 30 at Madison county Memorial hospital. He was 57 years of age.
The son of John and Ella Baker Wharff, he was born in Clarke county near Osceola on April 8, 1902.
His early childhood was spent in the St. Charles area.
For the past 15 years, Mr. Wharff was closely associated with the livestock auction business here, first as owner and operator of the old Winterset Sales barn at the north edge of town, and more recently as owner of the Reliable Sales barn and Hog Co. at his farm seven miles west of Winterset.
He was also an extensive dealer in feeder pigs, buying and selling light weight hogs throughout the United States. In addition, he was one of the first commercial feeders in this area to experiment with the feeding of dehydrated foods to livestock.
He was affiliated with the West Star Methodist church, and member of Green Rogers Legion post in Winterset.
On Dec. 23, 1953, he was married to Doris Mitchell of Madison county, who survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Charles W. Wharff of Des Moines and Doyle Wharff, now serving in the United States Navy; two daughters, Lois Young of Martensdale and Betty Jane Whipple of Swea City, Iowa; three step children, Wendell Mitchell of Dallas Center, Dale Mitchell of Martelle, Ia.; and Patty Kiddoo of Los Altes, Calif; 15 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Golda Black of St. Charles; and five brothers, Cecil of St. Charles, Harold of Des Moines, Harry of Bradenton, Fla., Vance of Pontiac, Mich., and John of Grayling, Mich.
Officiating at the services Sunday afternoon were Rev. William Morehouse of Worthington church and Rev. John C. Porath of the Winterset Methodist church. Military graveside services were conducted by Green Rogers Legion post at the Winterset cemetery.
