Wednesday, September 23, 1959HELEN SMITH DIES AT AURORA, ILL.
Mrs. Murray D. Smith, the wife of a former Winterset resident, died Sunday evening, Sept. 20 at her home in Aurora, Illinois of a heart attack, at the age of 57 years. The former Helen Pease, she was born in Macon, Georgia, August 20, 1902, but moved to Washington, D. C. with her family when she was a girl.
She was educated in the Washington schools, and was married there to Murray D. Smith, of Winterset, July 31, 1923, he being a son of the late Sam C. Smith of Winterset, and Mrs. Smith who is now residing in Bankok, Thailand, with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Van Syoc. They lived in Washington until he received his law degree, and then they moved to Chicago where he served in the Utility business for many years. In 1928 they built a home in Aurora, and they have since resided there. Since 1957 Mr. Smith has been associated with the Copley press, which has a business office in Aurora.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church and was active in various organizations of the church and community having served on the board of directors of the National American Red Cross for the past 12 years. She helped organize a Pressed glass club in Aurora and the last time she was in Winterset, was the guest speaker of the Madison county antique club at the home of a cousin, Mrs. J. C. Moore.
In addition to her husband she is survived by their son Murray D. Smith, Jr., and his wife, of San Francisco, California and her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Pease of Washington, D. C.
Funeral services were held at the Healy chapel in Aurora, Wednesday September 23rd at 1:30 p.m.
