ACCIDENT FATAL TO BESSIE SHUTT

Former St. Charles Woman In Highway Accident in Nebraska

Mrs. Bessie Shutt, formerly of St. Charles, died at a hospital in Hastings, Nebr., Tuesday, July 21, as result of injuries received in a traffic accident near there the preceding Sunday.

Mrs. Shutt was 79 years of age. She was born at Cool, in Warren county, on Jan. 22, 1880, a daughter of Edward and Clara Cashman. She was married on Dec. 21, 1899, to William E. Shutt. They spent their life on a farm in Warren county until their retirement in 1949, when they moved into St. Charles. Mr. Shutt died in 1953, and since then she has resided in a Des Moines nursing home.

She is survived by her three children, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Cedar Falls; Clarence Shutt of West Des Moines; and Mrs. Burnis Hughes of Denver. She also leaves seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Cashman of El Paso, Texas.

Mrs. Shutt was a life long member of the Methodist church; and a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star at St. Charles.

Funeral services were held last Friday from the St. Charles Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Trembly. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

Crash Kills Mrs. Shutt
(Special Dispatch to The Des Moines Tribune)

HASTINGS, NEB. —Mrs. Bessie B. Shutt, 79, of 604 Fifth st., West Des Moines, died Tuesday in a hospital here of injuries suffered in an auto accident near here Sunday.

Mrs. Shutt suffered a broken right arm and internal injuries when a station wagon driven by her son, Clarence E. Shutt, 48, also of 604 Fifth st., West Des Moines, struck a utility pole on highway 6 about six miles west of Hastings.

Highway Patrolman Richard Bronson said Shutt apparently fell asleep at the wheel and the vehicle went onto the rain – softened shoulder.

Shutt attempted to pull the station wagon back on the highway. It crossed to the other side, went into a ditch, struck a power pole and overturned, the patrolman said.

Mrs. Shutt was thrown through the windshield.

Mrs. Shutt had been vacationing with her son and his wife in Colorado.

Shutt, a Rock Island railroad engineer, and his wife suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Bessie Shutt Services Set

Services for Mrs. Bessie Shutt, 79, of 4140 Grand ave., who died Tuesday in a Hastings, Neb., hospital of injuries suffered Sunday in an auto accident near there, will be at 2 p. m. Friday at the Methodist Church in Saint Charles. Burial will be in Saint Charles Cemetery.

Mrs. Shutt had been living at the Golden Age Rest Home at the Grand avenue address. At the time of the accident she was returning to Des Moines from Denver, Colo., where she had been visiting relatives.

Born in Warren County, Mrs. Shutt had spent most of her life in and near Saint Charles. She was past matron of the Eastern Star at Saint Charles and was a member of the Saint Charles Methodist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Nelson of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Burnis Hughes of Denver; a son Clarence Shutt of West Des Moines; a brother Harold Cashman of El Paso, Tex.; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

New Virginia

Many were the friends in and around New Virginia, who were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Bessie Shutt of St. Charles in a car accident as she and her son and family were returning home from a trip in the west where they had been visiting her daughter. She and Mr. Shutt were former residents of the Broadhorn neighborhood and faithful workers in the Broadhorn church. She moved to St. Charles after the death of her husband several years ago. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in St. Charles Friday afternoon.
