ROSS PETERS, 81 DIED ON FRIDAY

Body Returned to Winterset For Burial on Aug. 7th

C. Ross Peters, former Winterset business man, died at a hospital in Long Beach, California, Friday evening July 31, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Peters suffered a heart attack last Thanksgiving day, but had regained his health and his condition was not regarded as serious, until on Friday, when he was taken to the hospital, and died a few hours later.

A native of Winterset, he was born May 13, 1878 a son of Joseph Leonard and Sarah Frances Peters. He attended the local schools, and Iowa State college at Ames, and the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines. He was married to Ory Hays, December 31, 1902, and they were the parents of a son Carleton Peters, who now resides in Long Beach and a daughter who died in infancy. The wife and mother died August 27, 1955.

In Winterset, Mr. Peters was in the farm implement business first with his father, then as a partner, upon whose death he operated the business for himself, until he moved to Des Moines. While here we was an active member of the Baptist church, serving as treasurer and Sunday school superintendent. He was active in other community affairs, and served as president of the school board.

Upon moving to Des Moines about 25 years ago and opening an implement business there, he took his son Carleton as his partner, which partnership existed until 1942 when he retired from active business. He continued to come to Winterset frequently where he owned and operated a purebred stock farm, southeast of town. He transferred his church affiliation to the First Baptist church of Des Moines, and again was an active member. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Winterset and later transferred his membership to the Moingona lodge in Des Moines, and when he moved to Long Beach in 1950 he transferred to that chapter. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Shrine.

Mr. Peters was active in the state Implement Dealer's association, one time serving as the president and while in Des Moines was elected as president of the National Federation of Implement dealers, and was active in the reorganization of the national group.

He was married to Mrs. Grace Blake, also a former Winterset resident, in Long Beach, November 4, 1956, and they both joined the First Congregational church of Long Beach at that time.

Survivors include his wife, Grace, and the son Carleton and his wife, both of Long Beach, and two sisters, Mrs. S. C. Lochrie and Mrs. R. F. Hickman, both of Portland, Oregon. A sister Jessie Peters preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Mr. Peters were held in Long Beach, Sunday, and Masonic services will be held at the Anderson Home for Funerals in Winterset Friday, August 5 at 2 p.m., and burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.
