OBITUARY

Festus A. Mapes, son of Orrin and Emma Mapes was born June 11, 1878 on his father's homestead in Penn township, Madison county, Iowa. With the exception of four years he lived on this farm all his life until he retired and moved to Stuart just a year ago. He was the youngest of seven children all of whom preceded him in death.

In 1912 he was united in marriage to Lois M. Spear at Algona, Iowa and to this union were born three daughters: Mrs. Roy Gilman of Stuart; Mrs. Kenneth Piper of West Des Moines, and Mrs. Carl Gilman of Stuart.

He was active in the Penn Center Methodist church for many years being on the Official Board since the age of 21 years. Mr. Mapes had a very active mind and was interested in anything constructive and helpful. His main interest was his home to which he gave himself unstintedly. He loved flowers and music.

Surviving him are his wife and three daughters, six grandchildren: Howard and Doris Jean Gilman of Stuart; Alice and Shirley Piper of West Des Moines, and Milcena and Craig Gilman of Stuart, besides a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mapes had been in ill health for some time with a heart condition, but the end came suddenly at his home in Stuart on February 27th, 1958 at the age of 79 years, eight months, and 16 days.

(Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery)
