WILLIAM GORDON DIED SUNDAY

Was Descendant of Pioneer Family in Madison County

Charles William Gordon, a life-long resident of the Winterset community and a descendant of the first pioneer family in Madison county, died Sunday March 29, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 85 years of age.

Mr. Gordon was born here July 30, 1873, a son of John N. and Rachel Clark Gordon. His maternal grandparents were Caleb and Ruth Clanton Clark of the Clanton-Clark family which made the first permanent settlement in Madison county.

He was married in Winterset Dec. 21, 1892, to Anna Burns. They were parents of two sons and four daughters. The wife, and one daughter preceded him in death.

During his active years he worked as a painter and paper hanger. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Surviving are the two sons, Charles and Harold Gordon of Winterset, three daughters, Mrs. Hallie Groom of West Des Moines, Mrs. Madolyn Morrissey of Winterset, Mrs. Anna Belle Kelleher of Spokane, Wash.; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Gordon of Winterset; and a sister, Mrs. Hallie Turner of Winterset.

Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Robert A. Owens, pastor of the Winterset Christian church. Burial is to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
