Death of Mrs. Mary Clopton

Mrs. Mary Clopton, a former resident of Winterset for many years, died Friday, January 24th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Jacobs, in Boone. Mrs. Clopton, who was 75 years of age, came to Winterset in 1869 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wells. She continued to reside in Winterset until in 1927. Since then she had lived with her children.

The deceased was born in Linn county, Iowa, January 9, 1855, and she spent her early childhood in that county. On November 13, 1875, she was married to Asbury Clopton, and they were the parents of seven children: Mrs. Wilda Jacobs, of Boone; Harry, who died in infancy; Mrs. Daisy Barrus, who died in 1909; Mrs. Cora Von Hosen, Tom and Charles Clopton, all of Des Moines, and Miss Mardie Clopton, of Woodward. She also leaves her grandson, Paul Barrus, who made his home with his grandparents after the death of his mother.

Mr. Clopton died in October, 1927, and she made her home with her daughter and grandson in Des Moines, and Boone. The body was brought here, and Rev. John T. Hall, pastor of the Baptist church, conducted the services at the church, Sunday, January 26, at two o’clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Clopton

Mary, daughter of Daniel and Catherine Varner Wells, was born in Linn County, Iowa, January 9, 1855, and there spent her early childhood. In 1869 she came with her parents to Winterset, where she lived until 1926, a period of fifty-seven years.

On November 13, 1875 she was United in marriage to as Asbury Clopton. To them were born seven children: Mrs. Wilda Jacobs, of Boone; Harry, who died in infancy; Mrs. Daisy Barrus, who passed away in 1909; Mrs. Cora Van Hosen, Tom and Charles Clopton, all of Des Moines, and Miss Mardie Clopton, of Woodward. Besides these is her grandson, Paul Barrus, whom she reared and loved as her own son.

After the death of her husband in October, 1927, she made her home with her daughters and grandson in Des Moines and Boone. She passed to the great beyond at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jacobs, in Boone, on January 24, 1930, aged seventy-five years and fifteen days.

Mrs. Clopton was a devoutly religious woman. Although circumstances prevented her active participation in its work, she loved the church and its message, subscribing to the principles of the Baptist faith, even though not formally identified with that communion.

Of starting pioneer heritage, she building her life on those principles which abide. In her passing she leaves the inspiring memory, and will of a loyal wife, a loving mother and grandmother, a true friend, and an earnest follower of Christ.
