Sydna Compton Day, daughter of Eli and Anna J. Compton, was born in her parents' rural home in Dallas county, Iowa, west of Bear Creek Friends church, on August 15, 1874. She received her education in the nearby rural school, then in Earlham Friends Academy, and later attended Penn College at Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was a sucessful teacher in the Compton rural school for several years.

On December 24, 1901, she was united in marriage with Dr. Edwin S. Day of Earlham. They established their home in Earlham, and continued to reside there throughout their lives. Dr. Day practiced medicine in this community until his death on September 17, 1935.

To this home came two children, George Ivan Day was born on September 27, 1904, but lived only a few days. Gladys Helen Day was born on January 17, 1906.

Sydna Day became a member of the Earlham Friends church on November 21, 1905, and continued active in the fellowship and service of the church through all her years until health failed in the fall of 1955. For several years she was an elder of the church. She took great interest in the Sunday School, and was for some years the teacher of the women's class, and later of Class No. 10, a class of older men and women. She was also active in the Ladies Aid Society, and in many other ways contributed to the life and program of the church.

She was a charter member of the Earlham Chautauqua Club.

On September 12, 1955, she was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage. Since that time she has been an invalid. But through the long illness she seldom complained, enduring her affliction patiently to the end. Death came with kindly release on April 14, at the Peterson Nursing Home in Winterset.
