OBITUARY

Bernard Lewis Troup was born near Paris, Illinois September 11, 1876. He was one of three brothers and two sisters, children of Palestine and Amanda Troup.

On becoming of age, he came to Iowa and for five years worked on a farm for an uncle and aunt near Webster City and taught winter terms of school in Hamilton county and one winter term near Platte, South Dakota. Then in 1906 he began studies in Teachers College, Cedar Falls. After two years he took a position as teacher and head of a small school, ten grades, in Lakota, Iowa. He was there three years and continued his work in college during summers. After getting his B.A. degree he was superintendent and teacher in George, Akron and Aurelia. Then in one year earned the M. A. degree at the University of South Dakota. He also taught summer school in Morningside and Buena Vista Colleges. He quit public school work in 1937 and went on his little farm near Earlham. Then in 1943-44, when teachers were needed he took the principalship and teacher work in the Earlham school. Then quit again, but for only one year, then went to the Melcher school for two more years.

Mr. Troup fell on ice and suffered a fractured hip on January 7. He passed away at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines on January 11, 1969 at the age of 92 years and 4 months. He is survived by his wife, Dolores.

His retirement years were filled with work on his farm. Here, he also reaped the rich enjoyment and beauty of nature and the constant companionship given to him by his faithful dogs.

Services were conducted on Wednesday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fisher Funeral Home in Adel with burial at the Oakdale cemetery. The Rev. Chas. White was in charge of the service. Casket bearers were John Brown, James Hunter, Mervyn McLennan, James Wilkie, Vern Wilkie and Melvin Vaughn.

Funeral services were held for Mr. B. L. Troup of Earlham at the Fisher Funeral Home in Adel Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Charles T. White, Clergyman.

Mr. Troup was born September 11, 1876 near Paris, Illinois. He died January 11, 1969 at the age of 92 and 4 months. Mr. Troup moved to the Earlham community in 1938 after retiring from the teaching profession. He taught school for 34 years, serving much of the time as principal and superintendent. He taught two years in Earlham during the war years of 1942-43.

Burial was at Adel. Surviving is his wife, Delores Troup.
