Member of Pioneer Jackson Township Family Buried
Here MondayGeorge Phillips, son of a Jackson township pioneer, and a resident of that community nearly all of his life, died Friday, March 14, 1947, at Forsythe, Mo., where he had lived the last several years. He was 81 years of age.
Mr. Phillips' parents, John and Sally Hake Phillips, were among the early settlers of Jackson township. They came from Ohio, and the father worked in the gold fields of Colorado before settling here. George Phillips was their only child, born Nov. 10, 1865.
John Phillips and Thomas Stewart were natives of Washington county, Pennsylvania. They married sisters, and moved on and improved adjoining farms in section 11, Jackson township. The elder Stewart was a blacksmith at the age of 16. After his death his son Robert, continued in his footsteps. The "Bob" Stewart blacksmith shop was not only a necessity for the people of that vicinity, but unwritten history of Madison county would support the belief that local and county politics often hinged on the outcome of informal parleys held in that pioneer blacksmith shop.
George Phillips was married Oct. 9, 1909, to Sarah Jo Rausenberger, who preceded him in death in 1929. Their married life was spent on the Phillips farm in Jackson township, but after her death he made his home with or near the Willard Sulgrove family, going with them to Missouri when they moved there a few years ago.
He entered Masonry in 1889, and had served as master of the Pitzer chapter for six years, later transferring to Earlham. He was holder of a 50-year certificate.
Funeral services were held this Monday with Masonic rites from the Welch funeral home at Earlham, in charge of the Rev. S. R. Overhulser, pastor of the Presbyterian church there. Burial was made in the Jackson township cemetery, formerly known as the Phillips cemetery. (Eppard)

His wife preceded him in death on October 29, 1929 followed a year and a half later by the death of his aged mother.
After their passing he sold the farm which had been his home for so many years, and lived with or near the Willard Sulgrove family, moving with them a few years ago to Forsythe, Missouri, where he resided until the time of his death.

He was a member of the Earlham Masonic Lodge, a good friend and neighbor, always interested in the affairs of the state and community in which he lived. He will be remembered by many for his homely philosophy and witticisms.
