LINDA POWELL DIES NEAR HOME

Tragedy Occurred Tuesday at Lyle Powell Home in Douglas Township

The first drowning of the season occurred in Madison county Tuesday evening when Linda Rebecca Powell, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Powell, died in the pond at the farm home of her parents, about seven miles northwest of Winterset in Douglas township.

The drowning occurred about 7 p.m. in the pond which is located about 100 yards from the house on the Powell farm. Mrs. Powell reported to officers that she and the little girl had been in the yard near the house when they saw a snake. Mrs. Powell took the little girl to the house, then went to look for the snake. Not finding it, she decided to cut some weeds where the snake had been seen. After finishing that task, she was unable to find the little girl.

While she was looking for the child, a neighbor boy, James Clark, came over to go swimming in the pond. He started searching also, and it was he who found Linda floating in the pond.

A doctor and officers were called immediately. All efforts to revive the child proved futile. She had been missing from her mother’s side about 30 minutes.

Linda was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Powell. They have three other children, all boys.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed as the Madisonian went to press.

Note: Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
