Obituary

Arthur Richard Schleiffarth, eldest son of Walter and Caroline Schleiffarth, was born on a farm northwest of Belmond, Iowa, May 30th, 1899. In the early morning of May 23, 1952 the whole community was shocked into a state of stunned grief to learn that he had passed away at his home in Earlham. To the many who had seen and talked with him the night before at the school auditorium it seemed incredible.

On November 14, 1928, he was united in marriage to Emma Harriet Nelson of Belmond. To this union were born three children, Eugene, who is now serving in the United States Air Force, Dorothy, who was graduated from the Earlham high school the day of her father’s death’ and Patty, who is ready to enter her Junior year. In addition to his immediate family he leaves his mother, Mrs. Caroline Schleiffarth, a sister, Mrs. H. C. Ellis, both of Carthage, Texas, and two brothers, Alva and Walter Schleiffarth.

Art grew up on the home farm and worked with his father until 1932 when he moved to Earlham and since became a very real part of this community. He first operated the local Chevrolet garage, but in February, 1944, while still continuing his home and interests here, he moved the garage to DeSoto where a good deal of local business followed him. In August of last year he was offered and accepted the position of custodian in the Earlham Consolidated school. This change was made largely because he wished to have more time to spend at home with his family.

To the many who have had business dealings with Art during the past twenty years it has been a continuous source of amazement to find that he always seemed more interested in solving their problems than in advancing his own interests. He was never too tired or too busy to lend a helping hand when ever the opportunity offered. These facts, combined with his genial disposition, have endeared him in the community in an unusual way.

He was a faithful member of the Friends church, the Earlham Volunteer Firemen, and the Odd Fellow Lodge.
