Winterset, IowaSTEPHEN PARKINS DIES AT 94 YEARS
Native of Ohio Had Spent Most of Long Life in Madison County
Stephen Parkins, one of Madison county’s oldest residents, died at the Horton Nursing home near Winterset last Thursday, June 19. He lacked one day of being 94 years of age.
Mr. Parkins was a native of Ohio, where he was born in Belmont county on June 20, 1858, a son of John and Elizabeth Parkins. Early in life he moved to Madison county with his parents, and this community continued as his home through the remainder of his life.
He was married Jan. 1, 1880, to Lavina Reigle. Their active years were spent in farming in Jefferson township, until they retired and moved to Winterset. They were the parents of 10 children, five of whom preceded the father in death.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Bentley of Winterset, Mrs. Nellie Johnson of Florida and Mrs. Eva Guiberson of Des Moines; two sons, Charlie Parkins of Des Moines and Allie Parkins of Winterset; 23 grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; a brother, Howard Parkins of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Allie Schoeh of Miami, Fla.; a half-brother, John Parkins of Lorimor.
Funeral services were held Saturday from Anderson’s home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. Sherman Hanson, pastor of the Winterset church of Christ. Burial was made in the Jefferson Center cemetery.
