WINTERSET PRIEST IS BURIED IN CALIFORNIA

Requiem Mass Said Monday for Rev. Matthias O'Laughlin

A requiem high Mass was offered in the St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset Monday for the Rev. Matthias O'Laughlin, formerly of Winterset, who died Tuesday of last week in the Mercy hospital at Santa Cruz, Calif., following a heart attack. The Rev. J. J. Judge, pastor of St. Joseph's, conducted the services.

Father O'Laughlin, who was 65 years of age, was a son of the late Terrence and Mary O'Laughlin and was born in Jackson township of this county. He attended the local schools, and graduated from the Winterset high school. He taught in the rural schools of Madison county for several years before entering the seminary.

After his ordination as a priest, he served as assistant at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, and later was made pastor of St. Alphonsius church at Mt. Pleasant, where he remained for about 10 years. Because of failing health, he then moved to California where he served as pastor of St. Columba's church in Chowcilla, for several years, and of Holy Cross church at Santa Cruz.

Funeral services were held Monday from St. John's cathedral at Fresno, Calif., with solemn requiem high Mass, and burial was made in that city.

Father O'Laughlin is survived by two brothers, Thomas and Robert O'Laughlin of Winterset; and three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Hogan of Winterset, Mrs. Winifred Core of Knoxville, and Miss Delia O'Laughlin of Santa Cruz.
