FRED F. MARDIS DIES SUDDENLY

Passes Wednesday Morning at His Home in Winterset

Fred F. Mardis, retired Winterset business man and builder, died suddenly here Wednesday morning. He was 72 years of age, and had been in failing health for several years.

Mr. Mardis was the last surviving member of a prominent family here of past years. He was born in Winterset Sept. 25, 1874, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Mardis. He was educated in the local schools and at a commercial college in Des Moines. As a young man he learned the brick mason's trade, at which he worked in Des Moines for about 10 years.

Upon returning to Winterset he engaged in contracting in partnership with his father, until the latter's death in 1908. They had established a coal yard here in 1901, and he continued to operate that until failing health forced his retirement a few years ago.

He was married April 14, 1897, to Jessie Snyder, of Winterset. He is survived by his wife; and two daughters, Mrs. Josephine Kirscher of Earlham, Mrs. Helen Nichols of Winterset, in addition to five grandchildren.

Funeral services had not been made as the Madisonian went to press.
