JOHN MITCHELL GRANDFIELD, Dayton, Iowa

John Mitchell Grandfield, 86, of Dayton, Iowa, and formerly of Winterset, died Sunday, March 25, 2007, at the Grandview Care Center in Dayton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 29, at the United Methodist Church in Lorimor. Visitation will be held from 3–8 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset where the family will be present to receive friends from 6–8 p.m. Burial of the cremated remains will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Lorimor Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to use at their discretion.

John was born April 13, 1920, in Lorimor, the son of Clark Cecil and Pearl Elaine (Faun) Grandfield and was a 1937 graduate of Lorimor High School. His marriage to Louise Helen Swan took place June 6, 1941, in Grant City, Mo., and to this union six children were born.

John and Helen lived and farmed in the Lorimor area for over 20 years. In 1966, the family moved to the Dayton area, residing there for eight years, followed by a move to Winterset where they lived for 30 years. John was employed by Circle B in Winterset and began building farm fence part time until 1985 when he turned 65. In his retirement, he continued fence building full time in the hills of Madison and Union counties, until age 79, averaging 15–17 miles a summer. John and Helen moved from Winterset to Pomeroy in 2001 and then to Dayton in 2004.

John was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lorimor. He learned many skills in the Lorimor New Hope Boosters 4-H Club and received several honors for cattle showing and judging and also served as leader of that club for 10 years. John was a member of the Lorimor School Board for a few terms. Most of all, John enjoyed his family — especially time with the grandchildren and building things for them.

John is survived by four sons, John C. (Mary) Grandfield of Antioch, Ill., James C. (Sylvia) Grandfield of Concord, N.H., and Jack C. Grandfield and Daniel F. (Mary Jo) Grandfield, both of Lehigh, Iowa; one daughter, Sheryl (Jim) Ainslie of Dayton; four brothers, Allen Lee (Connie) Grandfield of Chicago, Ill., Robert (Beverly) Grandfield of St. Charles, David (Pat) Grandfield of Lorimor, and Glen (Lana) Grandfield of Winterset; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Rodney M. Grandfield; a sister, Mary Augusta; and a brother, James Faun Grandfield.
