Etta May, daughter of Elizabeth and Jonah Shreves, was born in Madison county, Iowa, near Bevington, on December 3, 1864. She attended school in Crawford township and spent her girlhood and young womanhood there.
She was married to Wm. Johnson on November 11, 1884. To them were born nine children. One died in infancy and the eight remaining are: Mrs. Laura Kinnard, Denver and Everett Johnson, of Bevington; Ned Johnson, of Jefferson; Mrs. Ella Lytle and Mrs. May Rogers, of Winterset; Mrs. Genevieve Cleland, near Patterson, and Mrs. Susie Hastings, of Davenport.
They made their home in and near St. Charles until they moved to Bevington 23 years ago. Bevington was their home until the death of Mr. Johnson five months ago, and since that time Mrs. Johnson had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lytle, at Winterset.
She was for many years a member of the St. Charles Eastern Star, but after moving from there gave up her membership.
In the last months she openly confessed her faith in Christ, although she had seemed always a loving Christian mother. No sacrifice was ever too great for her to make for her children.
She had not been strong in the past few years, and since the death of Mr. Johnson had been bedfast, and passed away in her daughter’s home on June 5, 1930, aged 65 years, 6 months and 2 days.
She leaves beside her children and 15 grandchildren, 2 brothers, Wm. Shreves, of Wyoming, and Sam Shreves, of St. Charles, and 5 sisters, Mrs. Minerva McLane, of Valley Junction, Mrs. Sadie Bean and Miss Lena Shreves, of Chicago; Mrs. Ann Summerville, of Winterset, and Miss Olive Shreves, of Bevington, and many other relatives and her many friends.
