ESTELLA SMALLEY DIED HERE SATURDAY

Estella Smalley, formerly of Panora, died Saturday, Aug. 24, at a Winterset nursing home, where she had been a patient the past three years. She was nearly 85 years of age.

She was a sister of Mrs. B. F. Bare of Winterset.

Funeral services and burial were held Monday at Panora.

Estella Staley Smalley, the daughter of John and Rachel Ann Sawden Staley, was born September 4, 1872 near Spring Hill, Warren County, Iowa and passed away Saturday, August 24, 1957 at the Wilkinson Nursing Home in Winterset, Madison County, Iowa where she has been residing for the last few years. She was 84 years, 11 months and 20 days at the time of her death.

About 1883 she moved with her parents near Wallace, Nebraska. There, at the age of 17 years, she was converted and united with the Methodist church, later transferring her membership to the Truro, Iowa Methodist church.

She married James Gibson June 9, 1890 and for many years she and her husband resided on a farm near Truro. Following his death January 9, 1937, she located in Guthrie County. On July 23, 1938 she was united in marriage to Curtis Smalley. Mr. and Mrs. Smalley left the farm shortly after their marriage and purchased a home in the southwest part of Panora. After Mr. Smalley’s death on May 8, 1941, Mrs. Smalley still continued her residency in Panora. Due to ill health she was forced to give up her home and for several years she made her home with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staley of Panora, later entering the Wilkinson Nursing Home where she resided until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert. A sister, Mrs. Ben Bare of Winterset and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Staley of Panora survive, also other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Smalley was a kind neighbor and took an active interest in church activities as long as her health permitted.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 26 at the Beidelman Funeral Home in Panora with the Rev. Clyde King, pastor of the Bagley Methodist church in charge. Mrs. Bert Kerr and Mrs. David Alexander sang “Abide With Me” and “Jesus Lover of My Soul” with Mrs. Ruth Robinson playing the piano accompaniments. Casket bearers were Loran Galpin, Ralph Burchfield, Floyd Murphy, Albert Kalous, Harry Godwin and Herbert Reed. Interment was in the Brethren cemetery.
