Obituary

On Monday night of this week, one of our old neighbors passed away. Hiram C. Smith was among the few men who had lived in this county more than half a century. He was born in Euphratah, Fulton county, N. W., June 15, 1825, immigrated to this town in 1854 and has since lived in the old homestead on the Council Bluffs road, seven miles west of Winterset. March 31st, 1858 he was married to Mahala Jane Hart of Webster township who survives him. Two daughters also remain, Mrs. John Martin of Winterset and Mrs. A. D. Crow of Hebron.

The death of Mr. Smith reminds us of the hospitality of pioneer days. His place was known as the “Seven Mile House” and was often filled to overflowing with travelers on that prominent trail. This trait of character is well known to all who have ever visited the family.

The end came quickly like the flickering of a candle and the spirit departed peacefully and prayerfully. The funeral took place at 10 a. m. Wednesday, conducted by the son of an old neighbor, Rev. Ira T. hawk of Kansas City. Many relatives and friends followed the bier to the Wight cemetery.
