Obituary

Mahundra Hollingsworth was born in Concord, Ill., November 16, 1847, and died Aug. 3, 1909, aged 61 years. He moved to Adair county, Iowa in 1854 and later came to Madison county, where he continued to reside until his death. He became a member of the Methodist church some 39 years ago and always lived in an upright, Christian way, his church and his God being foremost in his daily walk through life, and always practicing kindness and charity toward all. His life was certainly a fitting example for anyone to pattern after.

He leaves to mourn his departure one brother, Elbert Hollingsworth of Adair county; and two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca DeLong of Winterset with whom he made his home, and Mrs. J. D. Williams of Des Moines, with other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held from the late home on last Thursday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Wilbur Re--- and the remains were laid to rest in the Rock City Cemetery.

Transcribers note: Per an article in the previous week’s edition, Mahundra died by being crushed by a wagon load of wood he had cut on a farm about 6 miles north of his home.

A Sad Accident

Mahundra Hollingsworth, one of Winterset’s most highly respected citizens was killed on last Tuesday while hauling wood from the timber on North river. Just how he was killed will never be known. He had gone to the timber in the morning for a load of wood, and as he did not arrive home about noon, which would have given him ample time to get back, his sister became uneasy and had one of the neighbors telephone out to Mr. Guiberson to see what had become of him. One of Mr. Guiberson’s little girls got on her pony and went to look for him and found him lying dead, partly under the wagon, with his head badly crushed. It is supposed that he had either been thrown from the wagon or had become faint from the heat and fell off. When found the wheel of the wagon was in a deep rut, with the hub of the wheel resting on his head, which was crushed. How long he had been there will never be known.

He was about 61 years of age, and had been in poor health for some time. He leaves a sister with whom he made his home, and two brothers, and a host of friends to mourn his loss. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved relatives.

The funeral was held from the home at 2 o’clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. ReQua and interment was made in the Rock City cemetery.
