Wednesday, April 26, 1939Mrs. Elizabeth Spence Dies
Mrs. Elizabeth Thomson Spence, well known resident of Madison county, died at her home north of Earlham, last Wednesday, April 19th, at the age of 77 years. Mrs. Spence came to this county as a bride in 1884 and made her home in Douglas township until two months ago, when she moved to a farm near Earlham.
The deceased, a daughter of John and Mary Ann Parks Thomson, was born at Aledo, Ill., December 12, 1861. She lived there until her marriage to David Taylor Spence on September 23, 1884, when she came as a bride to this county.
They were the parents of six children who survive the mother: Dr. Margaret Spence Bates, Marengo; William John Spence, Earlham; Mrs. Bessie Huff, Dawson; Mrs. Vasha Sorensen, Arlington, Virginia; David Taylor Spence, Hawkeye; and Miss Janet F. Spence of Earlham. Mrs. Spence was of a family of ten children, four of whom survive her: a pair of twin sisters, the Misses Nancy and Janet Thomson, Aledon, Ill., and twin brothers David Paul of Seattle, Wash., and Samuel Alexander Thomson of Moline, Ill. She also leaves ten grandchildren.
When a girl she joined a church at Aledo, and after moving to this county, united by letter with the old Union United Presbyterian church, now known as the Pitzer church.
A former pastor, the Rev. W. C. Porter of Waterloo, assisted by the Rev. Peter Bock of Earlham and the Rev. J. R. McNichols conducted her funeral services at the Pitzer church Friday afternoon, and burial was made at Winterset.
