JOSEPH RUTH DIED SUNDAY AT CLINTON

Had Worked As Barber in Winterset for Half Century

Daniel Joseph Ruth, one of Winterset's most esteemed citizens for half a century, died Sunday at the home of his son, Clyde E. Ruth, in Clinton.

Mr. Ruth was 87 years of age, and would have been 88 on Nov. 19. Familiarly known as Joe Ruth, he had worked as a barber in Winterset for 46 years. During those years he made a host of friends throughout the county.

Mr. Ruth was born Nov. 19, 1851, in Marshall county, West Virginia, the son of James and Eleanor Ruth. When four years old he moved with his parents to Guernsey county, Ohio where he spent the next four years. At the age of eight years he went to the home of an uncle at Millwood, Ohio, where he lived until he was 16. He then rejoined his parents to come to Iowa and Madison county with them. This was in 1868. They settled on a farm five miles west of Winterset.

In 1878 he moved to Winterset with his mother. Here he was married, on May 8, 1884, to Maria Hattel. They were the parents of three children, who survive. Mrs. Ruth died last year.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Della Shreves of Des Moines; two sons, Clyde E. Ruth of Clinton and Hattel Ruth of Winterset; two granddaughters, Margaret Ruth Lagergren and Kathleen Marie Shreves; and a great granddaughter, Kristin Lagergren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. J. H. Cochrane, Jr., pastor of the Winterset Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
