John A. Piatt, age 78, of Winterset, a long-time resident of this community, died Tuesday at the state hospital in Iowa City. He had been in failing health for some time, and had been in the hospital for the past month.
Mr. Piatt, was a native of Illinois, where he was born May 16, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wycuff Piatt. He is survived by his wife and several children.
Funeral services will be conducted from Neil Anderson's at 10 a.m. Friday.

Wednesday, August 2, 1939John A. Piatt was born May 16, 1861 and passed from this life on July 25, 1939, at the age of 78 years, two months and nine days. He passed away at the Iowa City hospital where he had been ill for several weeks.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Speer in 1902, and to this union were born six children, three boys and three girls: Fay Melvin, Thelma Blanche, Florence Louise, Dicy Marie, Andrew Wykuff and Jesse Clifford.
Dicy Marie preceded her father in death in 1936, and Thelma Blanche preceded her father in death when she was but 5 years of age, in Oklahoma.
He is survived by his wife and four children, three boys and one girl. He also leaves two sisters, who live in Guthrie, Okla., and a brother in Ft. Collins, Colo.
He was a farmer by trade, but in 1930 he moved to Winterset where he resided until his death.
Funeral services were held at the Anderson funeral home Friday morning.

Funeral services for John Albert Piatt, 78-year-old Madison county resident who died Tuesday, July 25, at the University hospital in Iowa City, were held Friday morning at ten o’clock in the Anderson funeral home, conducted by the Rev. J. H. Cochrane, jr., pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
John Piatt, the son of Wykuff and Sarah Piatt, was born May 16, 1861 and died at the age of 78 years, two months and nine days, in the University hospital where he had been a patient for the past several weeks.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Speer in 1902 and to this union were poor and six children, three boys and three girls; Ray Melvin, Thelma Blanche, Florence Louise, Dicy Marie, Andrew Wykuff and Jesse Clifford. He was engaged in farming most of his lifetime but in 1930 he moved to Winterset where he retired from farming due to ill health.
He is survived by his wife, for children, three boys and one girl; two sisters, Mattie and Clara of Guthrie, Oklahoma; one brother, Arthur Piatt of Fort Collins, Colorado; six grandchildren; five granddaughters and one grandson.
