MIKE RHOADES OF NEWTON KILLED

Collides With Burlington Bus in Head-On Crash

Mike Rhoades, 28-years-old, of Newton, was fatally injured Saturday night when the car he was driving side-swiped another automobile and then crashed head-on with a Burlington bus near Patterson.

The accident occurred about 11 p.m. Saturday. Rhoades, alone in the car, was driving west on No. 92. At the curve on the east edge of Patterson, his vehicle side-swiped a car driven by R. F. Schulze of Caldwell, Ida.

Rhoades' car then veered into the path of an east-bound Burlington bus, and they crashed head-on. The impact knocked the car well off the highway.

Investigating officers reported that both the Schulze car and the bus had taken to the shoulder in efforts to avoid the collision.

Rhoades was rushed from the scene of the accident to the Madison county Memorial hospital, but was dead on arrival here.

Schulze, and his wife and three children who were passengers in his car, escaped injury. There were about 20 passengers on the bus, and all of them escaped serious injury, although all were shaken up and several received severe bruises.

The bus was driven by C. E. Randolph of Des Moines, the same driver who was at the wheel in the fatal crash north of Lorimor last spring when Mr. and Mrs. Fred Reis of Indianola were killed. His leg, seriously injured in the Reis crash, was again hurt in the wreck Saturday night.

Rhoades was well known in the Bevington community, having lived there most of his life. However, he had been employed at Newton recently and had been living there.

Rhoades was a son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Rhoades of near Wick. He was a veteran of the recent war. In addition to his parents, he leaves a wife, of Newton.

Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Wick church, in charge of the Rev. Gene W. Carter of Indianola. Burial was made in the Wick cemetery.
