Obituary

Joseph Couch, Jr., died Friday, Sept. 20, at 11:30 a.m., aged 19 years, 11 months, and 14 days. Laid to rest Sunday, Sept. 22, 1889.

Scarcely had the peaceful remains of Mrs. Thomas Lenan been conveyed to its last resting place than the sad news was received that the oldest son of Joseph Couch, of Winterset, formerly of Bevington, lay a corpse in his parents' house.

The cause of his sudden death resulted through the effects of a kick by a mule. Little was thought concerning his injuries, as he rallied and expressed that he felt much better. But the worst was yet to come, and the time was soon at hand, and after 48 hours of pain and misery, Joe, the beloved son of his parents and the even welcome friend to all those that knew him, passed away from this uncertain world.

Never has Bevington and vicinity been more grieved than at the present, as three deaths have occurred that would even bring tears to the eyes of the hard-hearted, but there is no death that will bring forth such inconsolable grief as the departure of one, yes "one" so young and mirthful as Joe. His companionship and jovial manner made every one his friend.

The funeral procession was the larges that has ever occurred in this section of the country which was due to the marked respect the entire community had toward this winning youth. It seemed that the entire community was sadly affected and responded with their appearance at this sad and long-to-be-remembered occasion. Joe was laid to rest in the North River cemetery amid the imposing ceremonies of the Catholic church. The family has the profound sympathy of the entire community in their hours of affliction.
