Sarah Ward Foster

Sarah Catherine Ward was born in Ohio, Aug. 16, 1844 and died at the home of her son in Monroe township, Jan. 17, 1918, aged 73 years, 5 months and 1 day. She was the daughter of J. S. and M. M. Ward, natives of Ohio, who in 1860 located in Story county, Iowa.

In 1867 they settled in Scott township, Madison county. The father died March 18, 1888. The mother was born Aug. 1818 and is still living in Kansas in her 99th year.

She received her education in this state and for a number of years was a successful teacher in Story county.

She was united in marriage Feb. 6, 1870 to Geo. K. Foster. To this union were born three sons; Oscar W., Iver W., who died in young manhood; Melvin R. who survives her and resides on the old home place. Her husband departed this life Jan. 20, 1886, lacking only a few days of living a widow 32 years.

She united with the M. E. church many years ago. She leaves the one son, one daughter in law, one grandson, mother, one sister, five brothers and many other relatives. She counted her friends by the score and will be greatly missed.

Her funeral services were held in the M. E. church at East Peru, Saturday, Jan. 19th. The body was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery.
