Death of John Haines

Several years of failing health culminated in the death, Wednesday morning of John Haines, for 32 years a resident in Winterset. He was 77 years of age.

Mr. Haines was a native of Pennsylvania, coming to Madison county 32 years ago to engage in farming. He lived in Douglas township for a number of years. About 23 years ago he moved into Winterset where his home has since been.

He is survived by his widow; three sons, Ora and Ollie Haines of Winterset and Marion Haines of Lewiston, Idaho; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Algoe of Peru, Mrs. Maude Wilson of Grangeville, Idaho, and Mrs. Winnie Anderson of Winterset; and several grandchildren.

Funeral services are to be held at the Church of Christ at 2:30 this afternoon.

John Haines

John Haines, son of Samuel Haines and Elizabeth King Haines, was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1858 and went to Illinois with his parents at the age of seven.

On January 31, 1883 he was married to Mary Alice Fishback in Champaign county, Illinois, where they lived until 1889 when they moved to Hardin county, Iowa. In 1901 they came to Madison county where he lived until his death which occurred at his home in Winterset May 20, 1936 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 25 days.

To this union seven children were born, at a Chamberlan, whose death occurred January 30, 1926; Emma Algoe, Peru; Maude B. Wilson, Grangeville, Idaho; Ollie H. Haines, Peru; Marion L. Haines, Lewiston, Idaho; Winnie A. Anderson, Winterset. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

He was one of a family of ten children, two of whom know survive, Mary Barnes of Fairbury, Illinois, and Marion Haines of Webster City. In 1882 he was converted and in 1910 became a member of the Church of Christ of Winterset which he attended regularly so long as his health permitted.

Services were held at the Church of Christ Thursday afternoon, May 21, conducted by the pastor’s, the Rev. H. L. Olmstead. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
