Woman Who Came to Iowa in 1870 Died Last Wednesday
Mrs. Sarah Jordan, a pioneer settler of southwest Iowa, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Effie Proctor at Greenfield, Monday. She was 86 years of age.
Mrs. Jordan was the former Sarah Hannah Reed, daughter of Bonam and Rebecca Talley Reed, and was born in Noble county, Ohio on October 21, 1850. She lived there and in Lowell, Ohio until her marriage to John R. Jordan on February 8, 1870. They immediately came to Iowa and settled in Iowa county, where they spent five years. In the fall of 1875 they came to Adair county and that and Madison county was her home for the remainder of her life.
Mr. and Mrs. Jordan were the parents of nine children, seven of whom survive their mother. Her husband died in 1919. The remaining children are Mrs. Effie Proctor of Greenfield, Norris and Forrest Jordan of Winterset, Mrs. Bessie (Ressie) Willoughby of Rockford, Illinois, Talley Jordan of Davenport, Zetta Jordan of El Monte, California and Mrs. Dessie Pope of Lorimor. A daughter Mina, died in infancy and another, Mrs. Clella Coffman died in 1929.
Following brief rites held at Greenfield, the funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist church in Winterset in charge of the pastor, the Rev. M. R. Talley. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
