ROXANNA WICKS

Roxanna Wicks, daughter of Wallace and Mary Elizabeth Wicks, was born near Norwalk, in Warren County, December 16, 1879, and died at Madrid, Iowa on July 20, 1965.

When she was but three months of age the family moved to Madison County where she lived on farms in Lincoln and Jackson Townships. She attended rural school in Jackson Twp. and the Dexter Normal School. For several years she was a teacher in schools near her home.

After her mother’s death in 1908, Roxie assumed the duties of housekeeping for her father and cared for him at home in Earlham during a prolonged illness which ended in his death in 1922.

Then she became Dr. Day’s assistant, working in his office part of the time and helping people who were ill at home. This was an extremely satisfying time of her life, for she was helping people who were in distress.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Order of Eastern Star and a charter member and active in the Garden Club. She took great pride in this association and enjoyed caring for her garden and flowers at home.

In 1959 her health failed and it became necessary that she leave her home and the pleasant association of long-time friends and neighbors. Since that time she resided at the Lutheran Home at Madrid. She is the last survivor of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by three sisters, Dolly Ellsberry, Chrilla Nierman, and Jocie Haxton, and one brother Charles. She leaves to mourn several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Roxie Wicks were held on July 23, 1965, at the Evans Funeral Home in Earlham, with Rev. Dean R. Redshaw in charge. Mrs. Ben Beeson, representing the Eastern Star, also took part in the service. Casket bearers were Phillip Duff, Leonard Pitcock, Leland Pitcock, Myron DeVore, Earl Schalkle and Russell Ralston. Burial was at the Earlham cemetery. Mrs. Fred Fry was the organist, and Mrs. Lester Piatt and Miss Elsie Williams were in charge of the flowers.
