Lula Mae “Dude” Johnson, 98, died March 9, 2007, at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 12, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with Pastor Marty Burgus officiating. Burial was at Lorimor Cemetery.

Dude Johnson was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Madison County to Louis “Elmer” and Carrie Ellen (Palmer) Hiskey. Following her high school graduation, she furthered her education at Broadlawns General, completing three years of nurse’s training. Her marriage to Earl Johnson took place May 15, 1937, in Grant City, Mo. Dude was a cook at the Murray school until opening a nursing home in 1952. She owned and operated the Johnson Nursing Home for 24 years before retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Young at Heart Doll Club in Creston and the Rebekah Lodge and Church of Christ, both in Murray.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Clifford Hiskey; and two sisters, Frances Benson and Lena Peterson.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Kirk of Peru; a brother, Maynard “Bing” Hiskey of West Des Moines; two sisters, Leota Huston of Winterset and Polly Rakes of Camdenton, Mo.; and two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Lula Mae "Dude" Johnson

Lula Mae “Dude” Johnson, daughter of Louis “Elmer” Hiskey and Carrie Ellen Palmer Hiskey, was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Madison County. She died March 9, 2007, at Westbridge Care Center in Winterset. She was 98.

She always wanted to be a nurse. She began taking care of mothers and babies when she was 14 and continued doing this through her young adult life. After graduating from high school, she completed three years of nurses training at Broadlawns General.

She married Earl Johnson on May 15, 1937, in Grant City, Mo.; they became parents of a daughter, Sandra Sue.

Mrs. Johnson became a cook at the Murray School when Sandra started kindergarten and continued doing that until opening the nursing home in 1952. She owned and operated the Johnson Nursing home for 24 years before she retired in 1976.

A member of Young at Heart Doll Club in Creston. Mrs Johnson collected antique dolls. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and gardening. She made quilts for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many friends. She loved to travel and had been to most states and overseas. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge in Murray and belonged to the Murray Church of Christ.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, Wayne Kirk, brother, Clifford Hiskey, and sisters, Frances Benson and Lena Peterson.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Kirk, of Peru, grandchildren, Sherry Stuart and husband Jim of New Virginia and Jeff Kirk and wife Lori of Peru; great-grandchildren, Nikki Kirk of Kansas City, Mo., Joe Stuart and wife Nikki of New Virginia, Ryan Kirk and wife Amanda of Peru and Jill Stuart of New Virginia, four great-great-grandchildren, brother, Maynard “Bing” Hiskey of West Des Moines, sisters, Leota Huston of Winterset and Polly Rakes of Camdenton, Mo., many other relatives and friends.

Services for Mrs. Johnson were held March 12, 2007, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola. Pastor Marty Burgus officiating. Organist was Marlene Burgus and soloist was Jim Stuart. Musical selections were Beyond the Sunset and In The Garden.

Casket bearers were Jeff Kirk, Ryan Kirk, Jim Stuart, Nikki Kirk, Joe Stuart and Jill Stuart. Interment was in Lorimor Cemetery at Lorimor. Memorials may be made in Murray Church of Christ or Middle River Hospice.
