Larry Messer, 54, died March 11, 2007, at his home following a two-year battle with a brain tumor.
A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. Visitation will be held from 1–8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, also at the church, where family will receive friends from 6–8 p.m. Burial will be at the Winterset Cemetery.
Larry Messer was born Aug. 24, 1952, in Mount Pleasant to Leonard and Carol (Thomson) Messer and was a graduate of Shellsburg High School. He continued his education, attending and graduating from William Penn University and the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in education, specializing in social studies. On June 28, 1974, he married Becki Tumilty. Larry and his family made their home in Winterset, where he was a teacher at Winterset Junior High. He was an educator for 29 years, teaching eighth-grade social studies. He also was a junior high coach for various sports — including basketball, volleyball, cross country and baseball — and a Junior High Honor Club sponsor. Larry was a member of the Professional Educators of Iowa and the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Brent Messer.
He is survived by his wife, Becki, of Winterset; two sons, Benjamin Messer of Winterset and Thomas Messer of Raymond; one daughter, Katie Sullivan of Winterset; two sisters, Kathleen McLaughlin of Williams Bay, Wis., and Lorraine Messer of Oskaloosa; and a brother, Mark Messer of Mason City.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice or the First Baptist Church, both in Winterset.
Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
