Fred R. Hunter, 74, lifelong resident of Earlham, died at Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines on Saturday, August 28. Mr. Hunter had been in failing health for the past several years with a muscular disease, but it was not until earlier this month that his condition became critical.
Born in Earlham April 8, 1897, a son of William A. and Hariet (Harriet) Brock Hunter, Fred had lived his entire life in Earlham with the exception of about a year’s service in the Navy during World War I.
He was associated with his brother, Ralph B. Hunter, in real estate and insurance business starting in 1915. In November 1922 Hunter Brothers bought the Smith Ford Agency here, and continued its operation as the Hunter Motor Co. He had an interest in the Earlham Savings Bank and served as a director since its establishment in 1931. He also helped supervise the Hunter Brothers farming operations.
In the mid-twenties he married Helen Briggs who had been a teacher here. They were the parents of two daughters, Margaret (Peg) Schafer of Earlham, and Elizabeth Christensen of Orlando, Florida. Mrs. Hunter died in March 1957. In 1961 he married Helen Anderson Bobenhouse.
He is survived by his wife, his two daughters, two step-sons, Dr. Richard Bobenhouse of Iowa City, and James Bobenhouse of Des Moines; his grandchildren; one brother Ralph B. Hunter of Earlham and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Silzer of Peoria, Illinois.

Fred R. Hunter, 74, prominent Earlham business man and farmer, died at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Saturday, August 28, 1971.
Funeral services for Mr. Hunter were held Monday afternoon, August 30, from the Earlham United Methodist church.
He was born in Earlham April 8, 1897, a son of William A. and Harriet Brock Hunter. Mr. Hunter had lived his entire life in Earlham with the exception of about a year in the Navy during World War I.
He was associated with his brother, R. B. Hunter, in the real estate and insurance business beginning in 1915. He had been a director in the Earlham Savings Bank since its establishment in 1931; and also helped supervise Hunter Brothers farming operations.
He was active in Earlham community affairs and had served on the town council in the early thirties. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
He was married to Helen Briggs, and they were parents of two daughters; Margaret (Peg) Schafer of Earlham, and Elizabeth Christensen of Orlando, Florida. His wife preceeded him in death.
In 1961 he was married to Helen Bobenhouse. He is survived by his wife, his two daughters, two step-sons, Dr. Richard Bobenhouse of Iowa City and James Bobenhouse of Des Moines; six grandchildren; one brother, R. B. Hunter of Earlham; and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Silzer of Peoria, Illinois.
Rev. Ward Young, pastor of the Earlham Methodist Church, officiated at the funeral.
Burial was in Earlham Cemetery.
