Death of Clarence Jeffs

The body of Clarence Jeffs was found hanging in a tree, in the timber southeast of Winterset about six o'clock Tuesday night. The boy, who was 21 years of age, was said to have been in Winterset Monday morning. He drove to the timber near the Bradley Patterson farm south of Winterset, and apparently went into the woods and hung himself.

It is said that people saw the car standing there in the road, Monday, and when it was seen again Tuesday afternoon, went to investigate, and found the body. At first it was thought he might have met with foul play, but the coroner decided it was a case of suicide and no inquest was held.

The coroner, J. A. Leech, and the undertaker were summoned by John K. Sawyer and J. W. Eldridge, who found the body, the coroner declaring death by suicide. The body was brought to Winterset and funeral services will be held at the Ramsey-Richards undertaking parlors this afternoon (Thursday) at two o'clock.

The young man was a son of Mrs. Frances Jeffs, of near Peru, and he and his brothers, Everett and Charles Jeffs, had been employed on the county road gang. It is said that he had complained of not feeling well Monday morning, and that he was coming to Winterset to see a physician. no other reason than ill health can be given for the act.

In addition to his mother he leaves his brothers, Everett, Charles and Ernest, and five sisters, Mrs. Leota Achelson and Mrs. Ruby Achelson, of Peru; Mrs. Ethel Wallace and Mrs. Delia Jeff, of Barney, and Mrs. lulu Wallace of Rockwell City. Two brothers have met death accidentally, Cecil being killed in 1927 when he was kicked by a horse, and Fred burning to death in a barn several years ago when the family resided in Kasson.
