Farmer Takes Own Life at His Home Near Peru
Ernest C. Jeffs, well known farmer of the Peru community, was found dead at his farm home last Friday morning, with a .410 gauge shotgun by his side. The body was found by his wife upon her return from a brief trip to Winterset. (d. July 16, 1948).
After an investigation, County Coroner Paul Eggleston officially termed the death a suicide. Mr. Jeffs had left no note, but he had been in ill health for the last several years.
Mr. Jeffs was born in Union county on Sept. 6, 1906 the son of Edwin O. and Frances E. Jeffs, but most of his life was spent in Madison county.
In 1933 he was married to Easter May Snow, who survives him. He also leaves two children, Jo Anne and Everett; two step-children, Jack and Wilma; a grandson, and two brothers and five sisters, Mrs. Delia Jeffs of Lorimor, Mrs. Lulu Wallace of Rockwell City, Mrs. Ethyl Wallace and Mrs. Ruby Ackelson of Des Moines, Mrs. Leona Wallace and Charles Jeffs of Peru and Everett Jeffs of Truro.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of Fred McGarvey, pastor of the Deer Creek chapel. Burial was made in the Clark cemetery.
