ALEXANDER ESKEW

Alexander Eskew was born in Cumberland county, Kentucky, Dec. 23, 1834 and departed this life March 21, 1919, having lived 84 years, 2 months and 26 days.

He came to the state of Iowa in the spring of 1860. In August 1861 he enlisted in Co. K of the 10th Iowa Regiment, and after four years and four months of service was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas. He then came back to Madison county, which has since been his home, having lived on the same place for over 50 years.

He participated in 22 battles of the war. Among them were Champion Hill, Missionary Ridge, Battle of Chattanooga and war with Grant at the Siege of Vicksburg. He also went with General Sherman on his "March to the sea." He was converted and joined the United Brethren church in 1858 during a protracted meeting held by Rev. Armstrong and was a faithful consistent member until death called him to the great beyond.

Three sisters preceding him in death, he is survived by one brother, John of Winterset, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Carter of Patterson, and Mrs. Ellen Garmon of Scott township. Besides these he leaves nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services weere conducted by Rev. Godard at Blair Chapel Sunday afternoon and interment made at that place.
