Mrs. Amelia Joy passed away Wednesday, January 1, 1919, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alice House, in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, where she made her home for thirteen years.
Mrs. Joy had been in declining health for several months due to old age. On Thursday morning, the week before her death, she had a stroke of apoplexy, and passed away on Wednesday evening at 10 o'clock.
Amelia Zeigler was born at Boonsboro May 15, 1830, and was eighty-eight years, seven months and sixteen days old at death. She was married in her native state July 29, 1849 to James Joy. Mr. and Mrs. Joy moved to Illinois in 1852, where they continued to make their home and rear their family, where Mr. Joy operated a meat market for many years. He was a veteran of the Civil War and died January 16, 1897.
Nine children were born to them, two of which died in infancy. Elizabeth Flora passed away April 19, 1881; George Joy on April 19, 1912; Emma Kimmett on September 5, 1913, and Scott Joy, of Seattle, Washington; Wm. Joy of Leon, Ia; Mrs. J. W. Reed of St. Charles, Ia, and Mrs. Alice House of Winterset, Ia, survive to mourn the death of a kind and loving mother. Mrs. Joy also leaves surviving her sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mrs. Joy has been a member of the Brethren church since 1852, and was a good Christian woman. She was of a kind and sweet disposition and a woman who won the friendship and love of all who came in contact with her. When the call came for the knitted garments for the soldiers she spent almost her entire time knitting until her eye sight failed her. There seemed to be no work she enjoyed more.
The funeral services were held Friday the 3rd of January, 1919, in Ramsey's parlor, conducted by Rev. Jas. I. Goughnour of the Brethren church,Ankeny, Iowa.
