MRS. EMMA CAREY DIED HERE MONDAY

Funeral Rites Were Held Wednesday at M. E. Church

Mrs. E. L. Carey, long-time Madison county resident, died at her home in Winterset Monday. She was the widow of the late L. D. Carey, former Winterset grocer. She was 82 years of age.

Mrs. Carey was the former Emma Louise Clearwater, daughter of Louise Clearwater, daughter of Rev., was born May 4, 1856, at Bloomington, Ill. There her childhood and youth was spent, and she was educated in the normal school of that community for the profession of teaching. In 1877 she moved with her parents to Hamilton county, Iowa.

In June, 1882, she was married to Lyman O. Carey. They made their home at Jewell until 1901, when they moved to a farm in this county, northwest of Winterset. Five years later they came to Winterset where Mr. Carey operated a grocery store until the time of his death.

Mrs. Carey and her family were closely identified with the Methodist church. Her father was an early convert of Peter Cartwright. Three of her brothers became ministers, and one of them, John E. Carey, was pastor of the West Star church.

She is survived by her five sons: Frank, Walter, Dean, and Harold Carey, all of Winterset, and Ed Carey of St. Charles; eight grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Jenny Terhuny of Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held from the Winterset Methodist church Wednesday in charge of the Rev. J. R. McNichols. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
