Hazel was born to Charles and Martha Patterson at Prairie City, Iowa, on April 21, 1890.
Shortly after that her folks moved to the Dexter community where she grew to womanhood.
On April 4, 1915 she was married to Albert DeVault after which they made their home on a farm south of Dexter. To this union were born two children, Esther Branam and Marion, who both live in Earlham.
Albert DeVault died September 5, 1948 leaving her a widow until she married Lloyd Mendenhall November 17, 1966. They lacked five days of living together two months.
Hazel attended the Earlham Friends church last Sunday, January 8, and met with a group of community friends and neighbors Thursday night. The meeting broke up a little after 10:00 p.m. and they went home. During the night she became restless and couldn’t sleep. The second time she got up, she fell, and Lloyd heard and called out but she did not answer. When he got to her, she was unable to respond and was gone.
She departed this life January 13, 1967 leaving behind Lloyd Mendenhall, her husband; her daughter and son; a brother, Weller Paterson, living in Colfax; two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Stoner, Colfax, and Mrs. Helen DeReus of Mingo, Iowa. She also has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Millie Pearson and Mrs. Bessie Bell, and two brothers, George and William Patterson.
