Scott Township Resident Succumbed Tuesday at Mercy Hospital
Joe Harrell, for 43 years a farmer in Scott township, succumbed to a heart attack Tuesday at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines. He was 76 years of age. Mr. Harrell was seriously ill this spring, but had improved, and was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning for observation and treatment. His death came at 6:30 o'clock that evening.
Mr. Harrell was the son of John and Nancy Harrell, and came to Iowa about 60 years ago this August with his parents. He was married 53 years ago to Martha Spurgin. They were the parents of one child, the present Mrs. Maude McCauley.
Mr. and Mrs. Harrell lived on their farm in Scott township for 43 years. He had been an active farmer all his life.
He is survived by his wife, the daughter, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a brother and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Baptist church in Winterset. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.

Joe S. Harrell, son of John and Nancy Boltom Harrell was born near Madora, Jackson county, Ind., June 10, 1863, and passed away at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, July 25, 1939, at the age of 76 years.
He was one of a family of 14 children, who with his parents moved to Missouri in 1877, where they resided two years, when they moved to Madison county, stopping in the same neighborhood in which he had lived for 60 years.
On July 29, 1886 he was married to Martha Spurgin, and should he have lived until Saturday, they would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.
To this union was born one daughter Maude.
He followed farming his entire life, having never retired from that occupation.
He was keenly interested in all the affairs of the community, but gave most of his time and thoughts to his family and loved ones.
He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife and daughter, Mrs. Maude McCauley. Three sisters, Mrs. Mary McCown, Elletsville, Ind., Mrs. Candice Ruth of Winterset, Mrs. Daisy Stuart, of New Virginia, and one brother, John Harrell of Winterset; four grandchildren, Joe, John, Merle Utsler, and Dicky McCauley, and three great grandchildren, Billy, Donna Fay and Larry Utsler.
The pall bearers at the funeral services Thursday afternoon were Glen Foster, Earl McDonald, Harold Stuart, Zellar Graham, Frank Neidt and Clarence Spurgin.
