John F., the son of John S. and Lucretia Handley, was born in Fredricksburg, Ind., April 3, 1861. Here he lived until he was fifteen years old, when his family moved to Union county, Ia.

On Feb. 10, 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Givan. To this union were born three children, two daughters, and a son. After their marriage they moved to Guthrie county, Ia., where they lived for three years. Then they came to Madison county, Ia., to a farm near the Kasson church. Here twenty years of their life were spent. He was an active worker in the Kasson church and community. Sixteen years ago they retired from the farm to Winterset, where he lived the remainder of his life.

Mr. Handley was a man of great energy and patience. While all good and worthy causes were the objects of his solicitude, his greatest concern was always for his family.

Death came unexpectedly Jan. 31, 1939 at his home in Winterset, at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 28 days. He is survived by his faithful wife, his two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle McCants of Winterset, and Mrs. Goldie Thomas of Creston, his son Ray of Lorimor, two brothers, H. O. of Lorimor and Ed of Winterset, one sister, Miss Celia Handley of Lorimor, 8 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Rev. J. R. McNichols conducted his funeral services at the Methodist church Friday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
