Wednesday, September 13, 1939MRS. J. H. McMANUS OF BEVINGTON DIES
Madisonian Correspondent of More Than Forty Years in Her Community
The community of Bevington lost one of its most respected residents Tuesday in the death of Mrs. J. H. McManus.
Mrs. McManus had been a resident of Crawford township and Bevington for 71 years. For more than forty years, she had been the Bevington correspondent to the Madisonian. For more than two score years she regularly gathered the news of her community for this paper. A collection of these items would provide a valuable history of that neighborhood.
Death came to Mrs. McManus at the age of 72 years. She was the former Elizabeth Tiernan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Tiernan, and was born March 16, 1868, in Jasper county. The following year she came with her parents to Crawford township and the balance of her life was spent there and in Bevington.
As a young woman Mrs. McManus taught school for several years. She was married to J. H. McManus in 1896. They were the parents of four children, two of whom died in infancy.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, John McManus of California and Edward McManus of Bevington; two brothers, James and Peter Tiernan; and one sister, Anna Tiernan.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. this Thursday from the Catholic church at Churchville, and burial will be made in Calvary cemetery there.
