MRS. JANE GARRETT

Martha Jane Roberts was born in Clay county, Indiana, February 12, 1841, and died on November 1, 1919, at the age of 78 years, eight months and nineteen days.

Her parents, James and Nancy Roberts moved to Missouri the spring she was 13 years of age, crossing the Mississippi river in a ferry boat. They came to Iowa that fall settling on a farm in Adair county, where the twelve children grew to be men and women.

The deceased was married April 4, 1859, to Charles McDonald, he departing this life six years later, on January 30, 1865. Three years later she was married to William Phillips, February 16, 1868, and again being left a widow after a period fo six years, the husband dying December 17, 1874, leaving two children, a son and a daughter, Alvah J. and Dora B. The daughter preceding her in death eighteen years ago, leaving one child, Blanche Hockenberry Croft, to whom she has been a mother since Blanche was ten years of age.

A few years after the death of her second husband she was married to Solomon Garrett, with whom she lived until his death, September 8, 1885. After being left alone the third time she and her son moved to the farm south of Webster where she made her home until 1904 moving to Winterset, residing there until the time of her death.

In her girl-hood days she joined the Christian church near her home which she supported throughout her life. During her life she has encountered many sorrows, but through it all she has shown a cheerful face, always having a kind word for everyone, never finding fault with anyone, but rather making excuses for them. her life has been such that she will always be remembered as a kind loving, mother, grandmother and friend.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one son, one sister, Sarah Wilcox, and one granddaughter, and one grandchild, Leaham Croft.
