WALLACE WRIGHT IS DEAD

Civil War Veteran Dead. Funeral Held Sunday. Came to Winterset from Canada.

William Wallace Wright was born in Ontario, Canada, February 26, 1836. His father, Wallace W. Wright, was born in New York in 1799, and his mother, Diana Matt, was born in Canada, in 1807. The subject of this obituary was the third one of a family of four children.

When a boy of twelve years of age, the family moved to the state of New York. The father, having died in New York, the remainder of the family went back to Canada in 1858 and in 1861 Wallace came to Des Moines, Iowa, where he engaged in farming until 1863, when he enlisted in the First Cavalry and was discharged from the Army about one year after the close of the war in Austin, Texas.

He returned to Des Moines County, Iowa, and again engaged in farming in Sept. 1866, was married to Sarah McMackan, who was a daughter of a pioneer of that vicinity who came to Iowa from Butler County, Ohio. In 1867 the married couple removed to Ohio Township in this county and settled on an unimproved farm southwest of what is now Truro, there being no town there at that time.

In 1881 they removed to Scott township, about half way between Winterset and Peru near the main traveled road between these two places. In 1893, they removed to Winterset where they lived until the death of Mr. Wright which occurred early in the morning of April 11, 1919. Mr. Wright had good health until about two years ago and his decline was continuous and gradual until the end.

He was industrious frugal and generous. He was a man of decided convictions and was not readily severed from what he believed to be right. He was a comrade of the G. A. R. and a loyal member of the Methodist Church and liberally sustained both by his money and influence.

Mr. Wright leaves two sisters, one of home lives in New York and one in Canada. Mrs. Wright has a sister and two brothers living, one of whom Mr. James McMackan, of Des Moines County, was present on this occasion; also a nephew, Mr. Woods Irwin, of Henry County, Iowa, who was also present. A nephew of the deceased, Mr. Charles Wright, of Des Moines, who has spent much of his time with his uncle during his last sickness, was also present.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church last Sunday, Rev. Jackson Giddens, officiating.

Coordinator's note: He enlisted in the army from Des Moines County and it can be assumed that where it says he "came to Des Moines, Iowa", it means Des Moines County.
