WINIFRED Z. SANDUSKY

Winifred Z. Sandusky, daughter of James and Charlotte Bell, was born June 26, 1887 at Mayberry, Nebraska, and passed away September 24, 1969 at Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines. She was 82 years, 2 months, and 29 days of age.

Mrs. Sandusky grew up in Nebraska and entered the nursing profession as a young woman, devoting much of her life to ministering to the sick. She married Charles Alexander Sandusky on February 5, 1918. To this union two children were born: Donna Belle and Charles Alexander Jr. They made their home in the Earlham vicinity through the years.

She was a lover of music, active in community organizations, always interested in and helpful to others; a devoted wife and mother and a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of the ways in which she gave her life is evident in the various things she participated in. She was the first President of the Band Parents organization in the Earlham School, active in Eastern Star, belonged to the International Order of Kings Daughters and Sons, was a member of Scottish Rite Ladies Club of the Des Moines Consistory, member of Za-Ga-Zig Unit of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, and was a member of the United Methodist church in Earlham.

On March 29, 1937 her husband passed away and she returned to nursing, working at the Oakdale Tubercular Sanitarium at Oakdale, Iowa. In 1945 she returned to Des Moines and worked as head nurse in the TB department at Broadlawns hospital. And following retirement at age 72 she worked part time as industrial nurse at Younkers Department Store.

She was preceded in death by her husband, by two brothers, and an infant sister. She is survived by her daughter Donna Belle Lane of Earlham; by her son Charles Alexander Sandusky Jr. of Clear Lake; by one sister Merle Roads of Denver, Colorado; by seven grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews and friends.
