Mary Wickwire was born December 8, 1876 on a farm southeast of Redfield, Iowa. She was the daughter of Michael and Melissa Wickwire, and had two brothers and two sisters who grew to maternity, all of whom preceded her in death. Her elementary education was obtained at two schools in the neighborhood, known as the Coulter and Pleasant Hill schools. She attended Earlham Academy. She worked in various homes, and taught one year at the Garden Grove school.
Mary Wickwire and Marlin Curts were married April 24, 1901, when she came as a bride to the house in the Bear Creek neighborhood which was to be her home the rest of her life, almost seventy years.
Three daughters survive her- Nellie Mitchell of Indianola and Gertrude Conrad and Alma Mapes of Earlham; also two sons-in-law. There are three grandchildren, Gerald Mitchell of Council Bluffs, Marguerite Foust of Des Moines, and Kathryn Kessler of Victor; also three great grandchildren, Larry Mitchell of Storm Lake, and Marjean and Eric Foust of Des Moines. Besides, she leaves nephews and nieces, and many other relatives and friends.
Manor at Winterset, (rest of this sentence is missing from the obituary) She passed away on December 22, 1970 at the Winterset hospital at the age of 94 years and 14 days.
Mary Curts was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held for Mary Curts Thursday, December 24, 1970, at Bear Creek church, Rev. Kenneth Santee was in charge. Berneita and Ruth Patience sang two duets, accompanied at the piano by Berniece Hadley.
