Lee Township Resident Falls Into Fire While Burning Weeds on Farm
Frank McLaughlin, a long-time resident of Lee township, died at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines Thursday night after being fatally burned earlier that day while burning weeds on his farm. He was 65 years of age.
Mr. McLaughlin had been burning off weeds from his potato patch when his trouser leg caught fire. When he bent over to beat out the flame, he lost his balance, and fell in the burning weeds. He was not too active in recent years, and was not able to rise. He apparently lay there for some time, calling for help.
Mrs. McLaughlin was in the house at the time. When she heard her husband's cries, she rushed out and managed to drag him from the flames. Doctors who attended him at the hospital said he was burned from shoulders to feet.
Mr. McLaughlin was a life-long resident of the Irish settlement. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael McLaughlin, and has been widely known as a farmer and large scale stock feeder.
He is survived by his wife; his aged mother; a son, Robert McLaughlin of Des Moines; two daughters, Mary and Frances McLaughlin at home; three brothers, William McLaughlin of Belmond and John and Charles McLaughlin of this county; and two sisters, Mrs. John Linane of Bevington and Mrs. Ambrose Aylward of Cumming.
Funeral services were held Monday with requiem high mass at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lee township, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. J. Reynolds.
